Lightweight Women Win Third EAWRC Title, Open Women Finish Third

NEW PRESTON, CONN. - The Princeton women's lightweight crew successfully defended its 1999 EAWRC Sprints title with a one-second victory in the varsity eight race Saturday on Lake Waramaug in New Preston, Conn. The women's open finished third behind Brown and Radcliffe. Brown repeated at Sprints champion.
In the lightweight varsity eight race, Princeton crossed the finish line in a time of 7:12.10, followed by Wisconsin (7:13.20) in second and Radcliffe (7:41.3) in third. The Tigers finished second in the lightweight novice eight with a time of 7:31.40, behind Wisconsin, which clocked in at 7:26.40. Princeton also won the lightweight varsity four event with a three-second win over Wisconsin. The Tigers crossed the finish line in 8:06.40, while the Badgers followed in 8:09.60.
In the open competition, Princeton finished third in the varsity eight race in a time of 6:47.50. Brown won its third consecutive EAWRC title, crossing the finish in a time of 6:38.50. Radcliffe took second with a time of 6:44.90. The Tigers took second in the second varsity race behind Brown and ahead of Virginia. The Orange and Black finished first in the in the second novice race with a time of 7:23.80. Boston University followed in second with a time of 7:27.00. Princeton finished sixth in both the open varsity four and novice eight.
Princeton finished second in the Chick Willing Points Trophy competition--awarded to the best all-around open program--with a total of 62 points, 10 points behind Brown and four points ahead of Virginia.
The open women will be in action at the NCAA women's rowing championship in Camden, N.J., on May 26-28. The lightweight women will defend its national title at the IRA Championship in Camden,. N.J., on June 1-3.
