Stage Is Set For NCAA Final

Camden, N.J. - Familiar faces will square off for the national women's rowing championship on Sunday on the Cooper River. Washington, winners of the 1997 and 1998 first varsity eight titles, and defending national champion Brown each won their respective semifinal heats to advance to tomorrow's championship race.
The fours repechage opened the second day's events, with Cal overtaking Boston in the final 500 meters to defeat the Terriers by .22 seconds. The Golden Bears crossed the line in 7:36.17 while Boston finished in 7:36.39. Both the Golden Bears and Terriers advance to Sunday's grand final.
In the second varsity eight repechage, Washington led throughout and cruised to a four-second victory over Pac-10 rival Cal in 6:46.20. The Golden Bears trailed Michigan State after the first 1,000 meters before passing the Spartans down the stretch to finish in 6:50.60 and also qualify for tomorrow's final.
Brown captured heat one of the first varsity eights semifinal in 6:25.79. Virginia (6:29.50) and Princeton (6:31.79) were second and third, respectively. All three teams will compete in Sunday's final.
Washington captured the varsity eight-second semifinal with a time of 6:26.29. Cal finished second in 6:30.70 and Michigan crossed the finished line in third place with a time of 6:31.29. All three teams will vie for the varsity eight national title tomorrow at 11:40 a.m.
Tomorrow's action begins at 10 a.m. with the Fours Final for seeds 7-10, followed by the 1-6 finals at 10:20 a.m. The second varsity eights 7-10 seeds final is slated to start at 10:40 a.m. followed by the second varsity grand final for seeds 1-6 at 11:00 a.m. The varsity eight finals will begin at 11:20 a.m. for seeds 7-12 followed the grand final at 11:40. The awards ceremony will take place at 12:15 p.m.
