Piscataway, N.J. - Liz Patrick's (Sr., Oakton, Va.) goal in the 85th minute was the game-winner as the Tigers held off the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers 2-1. Princeton moves to 6-0, 2-0 against Ivy competition as Rutgers falls to 7-4. Unlike last season, when Rutgers snapped a season-opening five-game winning streak for the Tigers, Princeton remains undefeated having allowed only one goal in six games.
Freshman, Esmeralda Negron (Harrington Park, N.J.) scored her third goal of the season to put the Tigers up 1-0 at 35:08. Negron drew Rutgers' goalkeeper Christine Caldwell out, then cut the ball back to the middle and scored on the empty net.
Patrick put the Tigers up 2-0 when her shot from 30 yards-out ricocheted off the keeper's hands into the back of the goal. Tonight's goal is Patrick's first of the season.
Rutgers mounted a comeback late in the game when Keri Lages scored to bring the Scarlet Knights within one goal with less then three minutes in the game. Rutgers out-shot Princeton 17-10 putting seven shots on goal compared to Princeton's four. Princeton's keeper, Catherine Glenn (Sr. Jacksonville, Fla.) registered six saves.
Tonight's game against Rutgers will be televised on CN8, Saturday, October 6 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, October 7 at 1:30 p.m.
