Princeton, N.J. - Freshmen sisters, Janine and Rochelle Willis (Unionville, Ont.) connected on a beautiful cross and volley in the 55th minute to give Princeton a 2-0 lead as the 19th ranked Tigers defeated American at home on Halloween. Rochelle served the ball from the right side to a streaking Janine, who one-timed it past American goalkeeper Jen Liese. With the victory, Princeton improves 12-1-1, (5-0 Ivy) setting up this weekend's showdown with UPenn. American drops to 6-6-3.
Five minutes later Krista Ariss (Jr., Burlington, Ont.)(5 g, 3 a, 13 pts.) blasted in the Tigers' third goal of the game after a nifty two-step crossover that beat her defender and left her with an open look at the net from 15 yards out. The goal, which gave Princeton a 3-0 lead with 30 minutes remaining, all but put the game away. Entering the game, Ariss had been tied with Kristina Fontanez (Fr., Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) atop the scoring table with 11 points. American continued to fight, and for a segment late in the second half, began to dictate the tempo. The Eagles' efforts culminated in Diane Wootton picking up a loose ball in the Tigers' box and shooting it past a sprawling Jean Poster (So., Trumbull, Conn.), who replaced Catherine Glenn (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) in goal towards the end of the second half. The 3-1 score held to the final whistle, as the Tigers seemed to reawaken and resume control of the game.
Joan Cundey (Jr., Bay Village, Ohio) got the Tigers on the board in the 24th minute when she knocked in the loose rebound from Alex Fiore's (Jr. Garden City, N.Y.) rocket shot from the eighteen. Tested consistently throughout the game, Liese made 8 saves for the Eagles.
The Tigers made a number of substitutions in the second half giving many of the freshmen a chance to play. "We got a chance to play just about everyone, and everyone contributed in a positive manner," said head coach Julie Shackford. Assistant Coach Seth Korman echoed, "This win was an all-around team effort tonight."
Princeton travels this weekend to play at Pennsylvania on Saturday, November 3rd with first place in the League at stake. With a victory, The Tigers could clinch the Ivy title and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
