Los Angeles, Calif. - Stephanie Rigamat scored two goals as the Bruins of UCLA dealt the Tigers their first loss of the season, 2-0. UCLA is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation. Princeton entered the game ranked 25th. Princeton returns to the East Coast with a record of 6-1-1, having gone 0-1-1 against West Coast competition. UCLA moves to 9-0 for the season.
Princeton's keeper Catherine Glenn, (Sr. Jacksonville, Fla.) had to deal with 18 shots by the Bruins. Glenn registered six saves in the match and had been scored on once prior to today's match. She has allowed only 3 goals in just over 710 minutes of play. UCLA's goalie, Cici Peterson had four saves in the game as the Tigers took five shots, four of which came in the second half. The young Princeton team started a season-high four freshmen in today's game. Rigamat scored her first goal with 43 seconds ticked-off the second half clock. From 20 yards she put the ball into the top left corner of the goal. Rigamat put the Bruins up 2-0 when from the right side of the field she found the far post at 56:27.
"It was a great game," says coach Julie Shackford. "We played perfectly in the first half and after the over-time match two days ago, we simply lost our legs in the second half."
Shackford feels that the trip was a positive one for the Tigers. "We should have won the Cal-Poly game, but we just weren't able to finish that day." Princeton out shot Cal-Poly 20-10 on October 5 yet the match ended in a 0-0 draw. "Today we showed that we can compete with the nation's best," says Shackford. "It shows us what we are doing well and what we can work on to get better."
Princeton will host William and Mary on Wednesday, October 10 at 7:30. William and Mary were recently ranked 22nd in the nation and lost to UCLA, 2-0 on September 30.
