Princeton, N.J. -
Princeton University has been selected as one of 16 sites that will host the first- and second- round games of the 2001 NCAA Division I Women's College Cup, as was announced by the Division I Women's Soccer Committee this afternoon. First round-games begin on Friday, November 16 and second-round matches will be held on Sunday, November 28. At this point, no definite starting times have been scheduled.
The Tigers (13-2-2), who received the Ivy League's automatic bid into the championships by capturing a share of the League title and by virtue of a tie-breaker, will face the Greyhounds of Loyola (9-8-2). Also competing at Princeton University will be Rutgers and Boston University. The victor of the Princeton/Loyola match will face the winner of the Rutgers/Boston University match on Sunday in second round action.
For the first time in history, 64 teams were selected to compete in the NCAA championship, the largest pool ever. Twenty-eight conferences were granted automatic bids for the 2001 championship. The remaining 36 teams were selected at-large. The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, the defending national champion and winner of the ACC tournament, enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed.
"We are thrilled to be hosting this weekend," says head coach Julie Shackford. "We feel that we'll be able to compete strong in our bracket and we are looking forward to the competition."
At this point, no definitive times have been scheduled. Matches are tentatively schedule to begin at 4:30 and 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 16 and at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Please regularly check www.Go.PrincetonTigers.com for updated information.
