Final Stats
Princeton - Keri Lages' lone goal in the 26th minute was the difference in the match, as the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers defeated the Tigers 1-0. With the loss, Princeton finishes the season at 14-3-2, tying the record for most wins in a season. Rutgers advances to the third round in its first tournament appearance with a record of 14-7-1. For the four Tiger seniors, today's match was their final games played for the Orange and Black.
Lages chipped a ball over the hands of senior goalie Catherine Glenn (Jacksonville, Fla.) at 26:01 to give the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 lead, it would be all Rutgers would need to secure the victory. Princeton had it chances to even the score. Late in the first half Theresa Sherry's (So., Baltimore, Ma.) rip from inside the 18 sailed inches off the right Scarlet Knight goal post. Krista Ariss (Jr., Burlington, Ontario) had a shot in the second half that bounce off and over the cross bar. Kristina Fontanez (Fr. Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) took a Princeton-high five shots. Glenn finished the match registering five saves. Rutger's Christine Caldwell had four saves in the victory. Princeton tallied 13 shots compared to Rutger's 16 shots.
"They [Rutgers] played a physical game," said Heather Deerin (Jr., Livingston, N.J.). In a game marked by fouls, Princeton tallied 25 and Rutgers registered 23. Deerin received two of Princeton's three yellow cards. Rutgers received two cautions.
For seniors, Linley Gober (Atlanta, Ga,), Jessica Collins (Trenton, N.J.), Elizabeth Patrick (Sr., Oakton, Va.) and Catherine Glenn, today's match marks the end of their Princeton careers. "Though we lost today," says Glenn, "it wasn't bad game to end with, we all left everything out on the field and that is what I'll remember."
"We had our opportunities," says coach Julie Shackford, "but we came up on the short-end of the stick. Over all it was a great year, we asserted ourselves as one of the top teams in the country and I consider it a smashing success."
