Nugent Named Ivy League Player of the Year

PRINCETON, N.J. - Senior Mike Nugent (West Windsor, N.J.) has been named the Ivy League Men's Soccer Player of the Year, and is one of eight Princeton players to earn All-Ivy recognition this season. Nugent is the first Princeton player in 11 years to be selected as the Player of the Year . Tiger head coach Jim Barlow '91 won the award in 1990.
Nugent helped lead Princeton to a share of the Ivy League title and an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament. A two-time Ivy Player of the Week, Nugent was the force behind the Princeton offense, finishing the regular season with 12 goals and six assists, including five goals and two assists in league play. Nugent, a first-team All-Ivy in 1999, was a unanimous first-team selection this season.
Joining Nugent as unanimous selections to the first-team are classmate Matt Behncke (Williamsburg, Va.) and junior goalkeeper Jason White (Maple Glen, Pa.). Behncke, a first-team All-Ivy selection for the second-straight season, registered three goals and two assists in league play, and six goals and five assists overall for a Princeton squad that led the league in goals (34) and assists (36). White, an honorable mention selection in 2000, allowed 13 goals in 1,706 minutes of play. His goals-against average (0.69) was the best in the Ivy League. White also posted an Ivy-best 10 shutouts in 17 games played. Sophomore defender Jeff Hare (Richmond, Va.) rounds out Princeton's representatives on the first team. He led a Tiger defense that allowed an average of 0.76 goal per game, the best mark in the Ancient Eight.
Senior Graeme Rein (Birmingham, Ala.) and junior Bob Nye (Downingtown, Pa.), both defesemen, earned second-team All-Ivy honors. Rein registered a goal and an assist for Princeton while playing all 17 games. Nye played in all 17 games and finished with one assist.
Senior Lucas Moskowitz (Storrs, Conn.) and freshman Ryan Rich (Yorktown, Va.) earned honorable mention honors for the Tigers. Moskowitz finished the regular season with three goals and two assists in 16 games, and was third on the team with 25 shots. Rich had an outstanding freshman year for the Orange and Black. He had a league-leading eight assists while playing in all 17 games. Rich finished the regular season with one goal and 10 points, fourth best on the team.
Princeton (10-2-5) earned a first round bye in the NCAA tournament and will meet the winner of the Boston College/Farleigh Dickinson matchup on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 1 p.m. on Lourie-Love Field. The first round meeting between the Eagles and the Knights will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 23 on Lourie-Love Field. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for student and seniors. Weekend passes are $14 for adults and $9 students and seniors.
