Wrestlers Fall To Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Tigers lost their final regular season match against Cornell, earlier this afternoon, despite some strong individual performances. Cornell racked up 28 points against a Princeton team who managed to score only eight.
Princeton's Juan Venturi (133 lbs.), Joe Clarke (141 lbs.) and Ryan Bonfiglio (165 lbs.) were the three Tigers to win their matches. These three wrestlers have been destructive against their opponents, accumulating a combined record of 63-20.
Princeton finishes the season with a record of 12-9 including the results from the Roger Williams Dual Meet Classic and the East Stroudsburg Duals. The Tigers went 2-3 against Ivy League opponents. Princeton wrestlers will visit the EIWA tournament beginning March 2 at the University of Pennsylvania. *Princeton was leading 6-4 after the first three matches when junior Gabe Webster brought the match to 7-6 in Cornell's favor with a 6-3 decision over Jeff Bernd at 149 pounds. Leo Urbinelli then recorded a 15-2 major decision over Jon Bunt at 157 pounds to give the Big Red an 11-6 advantage.
The Tigers trimmed Cornell's lead to 11-8 when Ryan Bonfiglio edged Cling Wattenberg 5-2 at 165 pounds. However, Cornell dominated the final four matches with three decisions and a pin at 1:22 by Buck McLamb in his win over Joe Rybacki in the heavyweight match. Randy Stout (184) and Corey Anderson (197) each recorded major decisions by outscoring their opponents by a combined 23-4 and Jim Stanec took the 174 pound match with a 12-8 decision.
Cornell opened the match with a major decision, highlighted by seven takedowns, from Alejandro Alvarez at 125 pounds. Princeton then recorded two wins to give them their only lead of the day when Juan Venturi won with a 10-7 decision at 133 pounds, followed by Joe Clarke's 7-2 decision at 141 pounds.
