Princeton, N.J. - WOMEN'S FENCING SWEEPS HARVARD & YALE TO CLINCH IVY TITLE Princeton guarantees itself at least a share of third straight league championship
With a dramatic come-from behind victory, 14-13 against Yale, the Princeton women's fencing team (11-2, 4-1 Ivy) completed a league sweep and guaranteed itself at least a share of a third straight Ivy League championship. The Tigers rallied from a 13-9 deficit to defeat the visiting Bulldogs after handling the Crimson 17-10 earlier in the day.
Of course, it didn't have to come down to this. A touch here, a bout there and Princeton could have assured itself at least a piece of the Ivy title before the last match on the last day of regular-season competition. The Tigers, however, needed to win both matches this afternoon to even have a shot at the league title after losing a mid-season match-up with Penn.
To make things even tougher, after being tied 9-9 with Yale after two rounds, the Tigers dropped four straight bouts and were just one bout away from losing the entire match. Down 13-9, junior Alison Toy (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) won her first bout against the Bulldogs, 5-2, and started a five-bout win streak for the Tigers. The match ended with Mindy Rostal (So., Maplewood, Minn.) defeating Zane Seldrik to give Princeton a 14-13 win and its third consecutive Ivy League title.
Princeton has a chance to win the Ivy title outright if Columbia (3-1 in league play entering the weekend) loses to Penn (2-2 Ivy) at Penn State later today.
