Princeton, N.J. - The Tigers defeated No. 10-ranked Cornell 4-1 at Baker Rink on Friday night, as the Princeton defeated the same team that shut it out 3-0 on Dec. 1, 2000. Brad Parsons keyed the Tigers' victory with two goals, and goalie Dave Stathos made 29 saves en route to his fifth win of the season.
Princeton came out and played an aggressive and high-energy brand of hockey in the first period, which helped to set the tone for the rest of the game.
"We knew coming in that Cornell was a very strong team, and we knew that we had to take the game to them," said Parsons.
The Tigers peppered Cornell goalie Matt Underhill in the opening stanza, however, the 6'2" goalie made a number of incredible glove-side saves to stone the Tigers in the first period. Cornell would strike first on the power play when Doug Murray took advantage of a screen set by a teammate to beat Stathos high and to the glove side. Princeton's Shane Campbell tied the game at 6:46 of the second period as he scored his eleventh goal of the season off of a turnover in Cornell's defensive zone.
Brad Parsons would score the game-winning goal on the power play at 19:47 of the second period to put the Tigers up 2-1. Captain Kirk Lamb and David Schneider found Parsons alone in the slot, and Parsons fired the puck into the back of the net to score his ninth goal of the season. Parsons would score again early in the third period off of two nice passes from Lamb and senior Chris Corrinet.
George Parros added an empty-net goal at 18:44 of the third period.
Stathos played a very steady game in net, saving 29 shots and played superbly in penalty-killing situations.
The Tigers host Colgate, who Princeton defeated 7-4 earlier this season, tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Baker Rink.
