PRINCETON, N.J.- - The Tigers welcomed the Wildcats of Villanova to 1895 Field for the first home game of the season. Princeton lost the first game 3-0 and won the second game, 6-2. Princeton moves to 3-1 for the season dealt Villanova their first loss, who now stand at 9-1.
The first game of the day was a pitcher's dual. Princeton's Brie Galicinao and Villanova's Theresa Hornick each allowed only one hit when they entered the 7th inning. To this date, Villanova had outscored their opponents 49-5 and had shutout four teams. Hornick picked up her forth victory of the season. Galicinao, who only allowed one earned run in the game, drops to 1-1.
In the first match with Villanova, the Tigers could do very little at the plate, yet held tough on defense, not allowing a run until the 7th inning. Villanova's, Jackie Pasquerella started the top of the 7th off with a single. Two back to back fielding errors by the Tigers, put two Wildcat base runners on and allowed Pasquerella to cross the plate. Wildcat, Gina DeFrancesco doubled into left-center which brought the two runners, who had reached on errors, home. The Tigers were unable to answer in the bottom of the 7th. Tiger bats came alive in the second game of the day, smacking in 11 hits off two Wildcat pitchers, Keri Stoller and Kari Singley. Before today's match, Stoller had not lost a game and stood at 4-0. Sarah Jane White, pitching for the Tigers allowed only one hit in four innings and freshman, Wendy Bingham, who playing as the DP, came in from left field to relieve White, allowed only two hits.
The Tigers started the attack earlier, loading the bases in the second inning. Two of Princeton's top players, Jen Neil and Lori Volker were unable to bring anyone home. Princeton shook off the lost opportunity in the third inning and hammered in six runs. Lauren Poniatowski started the rally with a single. The Wildcats chose to intentionally walk Brie Galiciano, batting in the 4 spot and take their chances with the next batter. The next batter was Vicki Siesta. Siesta clobbered a homerun over the right field fence driving in Poniatowski and Galiciano.
The Tiger rally continued when White was walked and Devon Keefe drove a double into left field to bring White home. Jen Neil, who was the next Tiger to step to the plate, hit a single into center, which brought Keefe home. A wild-pitch allowed Neil to move to second. Volker was walked. Poniatowski batting for a second time in the third inning, reached first and drove Neil home with a groundball that slipped through the Wildcat's shortstop's legs.
Villanova threatened the Tigers in the sixth when a couple of slow infield hits loaded the bases with one out. The freshman Tiger pitcher, Bingham, kept her cool, struck out the number 7 batter and threw out the next batter when a groundball rolled back to her.
