New Brunswick, N.J. - Princeton defeated the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers 2-0 after 11 innings of the play in the first game of the afternoon. The Tigers were scheduled to play a double header yet the second game was called after three innings due to darkening skies.
Brie Galicinao, the pitcher on the mound for the Tigers, had a sensational game, allowing only 5 hits in 11 innings. Galicinao struck-out 10 Scarlet Knights and threw 158 pitches. Galicinao's record improves to 2-4. Pitching for Rutgers was Leah Black. Black allowed five hits and struck-out eight tiger batters.
Neither team put together any offensive threat until the top of the 11th. Not a single runner for the Tigers or the Scarlet Knights reached 3rd base until the final inning in which Princeton took the lead. Princeton's right fielder Jen Neil, lead the off the top of the 11th with a single up the middle. Lori Volker, hitting .290 before today's contest, hit a double into right field that moved Neil to third base. Galicinao drove Neil and Volker home with a double into left field. The two runs that scored off of Galicinao's double is all that the Tigers would need.
The Tigers started the second game at 5:40. Only three innings were played until the umpires called the game. At that point, Sarah Jane White was pitching for the Tigers who were up 2-1.
Princeton will host the University of Maryland and Marist College, March 31 and April 1 during the Princeton Invitational. Princeton dropped a game to Maryland, 1-0, last weekend at the Buzz Classic held in Marietta,Georgia.
