Lawrenceville, N.J. - The Tiger softball team defeated the Broncs of Rider University, 6-0 and 9-6 in today's double header. The victories follow a disappointing league weekend in which the Tigers dropped one to Harvard and two to Dartmouth.
On the mound for the Tigers in the first game was Brie Galicinao, who picked up her fifth win of the season. Galicinao allowed only four hits and walked one Rider batter. Galicinao registered an impressive twelve strikeouts and did not allow a runner on base until the forth inning. Galcinao, who currently leads the Tigers in batting average with .397, went 3-4 in both games and scored 2 runs.
In the first game of the day, right fielder, Anna Soper began the Tigers scoring effort in the two run forth inning, with a single. The Broncs infield committed three errors that allowed Soper score and allowed several other Tigers to reach base. Keefe scored the second run in the forth inning. The Tigers scored four more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Rider could not answer in the bottom of the inning. Pinch hitting for Lori Volker, Vicki Siesta started the top of the seventh off with a double. Siesta made it home off a double hit by Galicinao. The next Princeton batter, Kim Veenstra, followed Galicinao's double with a double of her own, Galicinao scored on the hit. Erin Valocsik batted Veenstra in with a single down the left field line. Valocsik would score on a single hit off the bat of Amanda Haines. The Tigers finished the game with 12 hits.
The second game of this afternoon happened to be a game of "1st" for many of the Tigers. Freshman pitcher, Wendy Bingham struck-out 5 Broncs and picked up her first career Princeton victory. Senior Lauren Poniatowski, who was recently voted to the all-decade team at Princeton, hit her first career homerun in the first inning of today's nightcap. Senior, Lori Volker, also recently named to the all-decade team, hit her first career homerun in the second inning. Finally, freshman Kristen Del Calvo hit her first career homerun as a Princeton Tiger. Del Calvo's blast happened to be the game winning grand slam.
Princeton started the scoring early, going up 5-2 at the end of the seconding inning. The Tigers scored four more runs of Del Calvo's grand-slam in the sixth inning.
Princeton was out hit in the second game, 9-13 but they pulled out the 9-6 victory.
Brie Galicinao's ERA drops below 1.00 to .97 and Kim Veenstra continued her 8 game hitting streak.
The Tigers will travel to Yale on Friday, April 13 and Harvard on April 14. Princeton looks to improve on a 1-3 Ivy League record.
