Hempstead, N.Y. - The Tiger softball team moved to 12-13 on the season after they lost both games of today's doubleheader at Hoftra. Princeton lost the first game 1-0 and lost the nightcap 3-2. Today's losses follow a disappointing Ivy League weekend in which the Tigers split doubleheaders with Brown and Yale.
In today's first game, Brie Galicinao who has been Princeton's top pitcher all season, picked up the loss and moved to 6-6 on the season. Galicinao, who suffered an injury this past weekend that kept her out of the Brown games, returned today striking out the first two Hofstra batters to begin the first match. Galicinao finished the game, striking five batters and allowed only 5 hits.
Princeton fell behind on an unearned run in the third inning. The Tigers, who registered a scattered six hits, were never able to string an offensive threat together except for late in the fifth inning when freshman, Wendy Bingham was called out on close play at the plate to end the inning. Senior Lori Volker had an impressive day in the leadoff position hitting 2-4.
Princeton fell behind early in the second game when they went down by a run after the first inning. The Tigers tied the game at 1-1 in the forth on a run scored by junior Kim Veenstra. Veenstra reached base on a single hit into left field and advanced to second on an infield error. Senior, Vicki Siesta batted Veenstra in with a single up the middle.
Princeton gave up two more runs in the fifth inning and were unable to answer in the later innings. The Tigers would score a run in the top of the seventh yet it was not enough to catch Hofstra who won the game 3-2.
Princeton will travel to Columbia on Sat. April 21 and Cornell on Sun. April 22 as they continue with Ivy League play.
