Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton softball team shutout the Hawks of Monmouth University in today's doubleheader. The Tigers took the first game, 2-0 and won the nightcap with a 5-0 score. Princeton moves to a 17-14 record after the non-league doubleheader against Monmouth.
In the pitcher's circle for the Tigers in today's first match was Brie Galicinao. Galicinao struck-out eight Monmouth batters and allowed only one hit. Galicinao, who currently stands at 9-6 on the season, lowers her ERA to 0.74. She is on a three game winning streak and has not given up an earned run in her last four starts, all of which happen to be complete games.
Starting Tiger shortstop, Kim Veenstra had a sensational day at the plate. Veenstra, who has hit in 16 of the last 18 games, went 3 for 3 in today's contest. One of Veenstra's hits was a two-run homerun that sailed over the left field fence. The blast scored Galicinao who had reached first on a fielder's choice. For Veenstra, today's homerun was her forth of the season and helps move her batting average to .347. Monmouth left seven base runners stranded in the loss. Scarlett Reuter picks up the loss for the Hawks. Reuter struck-out three Tiger batters and allowed five hits.
Wendy Bingham was the Tiger pitcher in today's second match up. Bingham entered today's game after a dismal performance against Cornell this past weekend. The Tiger pitcher was able to regroup today and picked up the complete game victory for Princeton, improving her record to 3-4. Bingham struck-out six batters, allowed only three hits and did not give up a single walk.
Devon Keefe, Lori Volker and Brie Galicinao each had two hits a piece in the 5-0 victory. Keefe started the Tiger scoring effort in the second inning when she smashed a ball over the left field fence, to put her team up 1-0. The ball landed on the courts of the Lenz Tennis Center that is located approximately 30-40 feet behind the left field fence of 1895 field. Galicinao put the Tigers up 2-0 in the forth inning when she sent a ball over the dead center field wall for a solo homerun.
Princeton scored three more runs in the fifth inning. Volker who had reached on a single and Jen Neil who had reached on a fielder's choice, both scored to increase the Tiger lead to 4-0 when Galicinao single into left field. Lauren Poniatowski, who reached base on a single, scored when she tagged up on a sacrifice fly hit deep into right field off the bat of Keefe.
Princeton will host two doubleheaders this weekend, Penn on Saturday and St. Peter's on Sunday. Saturday's double is schedule to begin at 1 p.m. The doubleheader against St. Peter's is set to begin at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live over www.goprincetontigers.com
