Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton women's tennis team defeated the Owls of Temple University, 5-2 on the courts of the Lenz Tennis Center this afternoon. Princeton finishes their season at 8-10 and 3-4 in the Ivy League. For the two captains, Gailor Large and Anne Coates, today's matches were their final ones played as a Princeton Tiger.
Princeton had a great start when the three Tiger doubles teams swept the competition from Temple, this is the first time all season the Princeton has won all three doubles matches. With the one doubles point already earned, the Tigers readied themselves for singles competition.
Playing in her final match at Princeton, senior Gailor Large lost to Danira Penic 6-2, 7-5. Large has been a four-year starter for the Tigers. As a freshman, Large stepped onto the courts competing in the No. 6 singles spot and playing on the No. 3 doubles team. Large leaves Princeton having played most of her senior year in the No. 1 singles spot and on the No. 1 doubles team along side teammate Kavitha Krishnamurty. Senior Anne Coates rounded off her career as Tiger when she dropped her No. 4 singles match to Temple's Katarina Kramaric, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (2). Coates has the rare distinction of playing in every Princeton match this fall and spring.
"Gailor and Anne are tremendous competitors who have represented Princeton well with their great tennis, sportmanship and heart," said head coach Louise Gengler. "Their leadership this year has been invaluable to the team and the example they have set on and off the court is a standard for the underclassmen. We will miss them."
Princeton's Kristi Watson playing in the No. 2 singles position and Priya Bhupathi playing No. 3, who have both been consistently strong for the Tigers all season, defeated Tamara Truta 6-3,7-5, 1-0 (5) and Lara Ercegocic 6-3, 6-2. Watson and Bhupathi will return next season as two of the top Tiger women's tennis athletes. Freshman Jackie Arcario, who has seen a good deal of action this year in the No. 5 and 6 singles spot, defeat Nina Kumar 6-2, 7-5.
