PRINCETON, N.J. - It's tough to come back from an 8-0 hole. It's even harder to do it twice in one day. Princeton softball dropped two games to the Big Green today after finding themselves down by several runs in the early innings of both matches. The Tigers fall to 8-9 on the season and 1-3 in Ivy League competition.
Nothing seemed to be going right for the Tigers today. Brie Galicinao, Princeton's pitcher in the first game gave up nine hits and four earned runs in six innings. Galicinao, who averaged fewer than two walks a game, gave up four in today's contest. Galicinao entered today's match after back to back wins and with a 0.73 ERA.
Dartmouth jumped ahead early, scoring one run in the first and then four more in the second. The Big Green opened up an 8-0 in the sixth inning. The Tigers had their chances to fight back, in the second, putting runners on the corners with no outs yet they were unable to drive any runners home. With their backs against the wall, the Tiger rallied in the bottom of the sixth, putting up three runs. Third baseman, Lauren Poniatowski had reach first on a fielder's choice. Galicinao, who leads the Tigers in batting, cranked a double into left centerfield that brought Poniatowski home. Galicinao was able to advance to third base on the throw. Kim Veenstra was the next Tiger to step to the plate. Veenstra, who finished the game with 2 hits and walk, reached base when a pitch hit her. Anna Soper picked up the RBI when a slow grounder to the shortstop brought Galicinao home. Devon Keefe picked up a RBI when she reached on a single hit into centerfield that brought Veenstra home.
The Tigers would score two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, yet they were unable to recover from the early deficit. Once again errors plagued the Tigers who committed three. Darmouth's Christine Quattrocchi went the distance, picking up the win after seven innings.
The second game of the day started much like the first. The Tigers found themselves behind 4-0 before they had a chance to bat in the bottom of the first inning. On the mound for the Tigers was Sarah Jane White who simply had a tough day, she face four batters, gave up four hits and allowed four earned runs.
Dartmouth's Sarah Doman started the first inning off with a double into left field. The next batter, Cherie Cameuo belted a homerun over the left-center field wall, scoring Doman. White was taken out of the game after only pitching to four Dartmouth batters. The Big Green posted a total of four runs in the first inning and four in the forth inning. Princeton was unable to score and the game was called after the bottom of the fifth due to the mercy rule that states if a team is up by eight after five innings, the game is called.
Freshman pitcher, Wendy Bingham came in to relieve White in the first inning. Bingham allowed four runs on six hits. She struck out four Dartmouth batters.
The Tigers will travel to Rider University, Tuesday April 10, for a double header set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
