East Orange, N.J. - Brie Galicinao, the Tiger's ace pitcher, picked up the loss as Princeton allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate in today's first loss, 2-1. Princeton fell behind 4-0 in the nightcap and was never able to bounce back from the deficit, dropping the second game 4-1. After the two losses, the Tigers fall to 20-17 on the season
The Tigers were unable to get anything going today in the first game. Though Galicinao escaped the game without allowing an earned run, she struggled in the pitcher's circle allowing seven hits and only struck out one batter. Galicinao entered the game with a 0.66 ERA, the tenth lowest in the nation.
Misty Beaver, the Pirates pitcher in the first game, is ranked twelfth in the nation in strikeouts per seven inning pitched. Beaver allowed only three hits in six innings and struck out 10 Tiger batters. Galicinao drove in left fielder Jen Neil for the Tigers lone run, to tie the game at 1-1. A costly error in the bottom of the eighth allowed the winning Pirate run to cross the plate. A single hit into centerfield should have allowed the Seton Hall base runner, Marlena Kotynski to advanced to third, trickled into deep centerfield as Princeton's outfielders did not communicate who would make the play. The ball sat dead in the outfield as Kotynski rounded third for the winning run.
Pitching for the Tigers in the second game was freshman Wendy Bingham. Bingham was recently named rookie of the week for her three consecutive wins. In six innings pitched, Bingham gave up 11 hits and struck out six Pirates. Bingham moves to 5-5 on the season after the 4-1 loss. Two of the four Seton Hall runs were unearned.
The Pirates struck early, scoring two runs in the first inning. Once again, the runs were unearned as an early error by the Tiger infield allowed the lead-off batter to reach. The Pirates scored one run in the third and one run in the forth to go up 4-0.
Bingham scored the lone Princeton run in the fifth when she was walked in. The Tigers were threatening in the fifth when a hard line-drive hit off the bat of Kim Veenstra was picked out of the air by Seton Hall's third baseman Vickie Lamb. Lori Volker was caught off third base and the Pirates completed the double play to escape the inning.
The Tigers will travel to Boston College on Saturday, May 5 to play the final two games of the season.
