Klye Kliegerman, the no. 1 singles player for the Tiger men's team will be joined by John Portlock and Kavitha Krishnamurthy at the 2001 Division I NCAA Championships. Kliegerman has competed for Princeton in the No. 1 singles spot for the last three years and earns a spot in both the singles and doubles competitions of the tournament. Krishnamurthy, who had a sensational freshman season last year and who was hampered this season by a nagging back injury, maintained national ranking through competing in several matches and earned a trip to the singles competition. Portlock and Kliegerman make up one of the top doubles team in the Northeast and the two will compete together in the doubles portion of the tournament.
The selection of the teams and individuals for the championships is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule, and eligibility and availability of student-athletes. Each region receives automatic entry for four singles players and two doubles teams.
Kliegerman was not expected to make the tournament yet was given the opportunity to travel to Athens, Ga. when it was discovered that an error had been made in the record keeping of one of the originally selected athletes for the Northeast region. Once the correction had been made, Kliegerman earned his chance to compete in the championships. He finished the season with a 20-11 record in singles matches.
Kavitha Krishnamurthy, currently ranked 58th in the nation, struggled much of the spring season due to an injury yet still managed to secure a position in the brackets of the singles competition.
John Portlock is half of one of the top doubles teams in the northeast. Portlock, the other senior captain on the men's tennis team, also saw his share of matches missed due to injure yet he was able to return to compete with Kliegerman on the doubles courts.
The singles and doubles competition will take place May 23-28 at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.
