PRINCETON, N.J. -Jeff Halpern '99, now a member of the Washington Capitals, is one of 37 National Hockey League players invited to the 2001 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Orientation Camp, to be held Sept. 4-7 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Halpern has played for Team USA in each of the last two World Championships.
Halpern, a center, signed with Washington as a free agent on March 30, 1999. He finished the 2000-01 season third on the Capitals in goals (21) and sixth in total points (42). Halpern has led Washington in plus/minus rating (+13 in 2000-01, +21 in 1999-00) in each of his first two years in the NHL. In 158 career games he has registered 39 goals and 31 assists for 70 points.
Halpern is firmly entrenched in Princeton's record books. A two-time second-team All-ECAC selection, Halpern was the ECAC Tournament MVP when the Tigers captured the title in 1998. He was a three-time recipient of The Blackwell Trophy, annually presented to the Princeton player who in play, sportsmanship and influence has contributed most to the sport, and was twice named first-team All-Ivy. Halpern played a program-record 132 games in his collegiate career and is third on Princeton's all-time scoring chart with 141 points (60g, 81a).
USA Hockey has already named 14 players to the 2002 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team, all of whom will attend the camp. The orientation will consist of on- and off-ice components and is designed to assist in the preparation of the 2002 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team that will compete in the XIX Olympic Winter Games, to be held Feb. 8-24 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
