Williamsburg, Va. - Kavitha Krishnamurthy defeated Debbie Laroque of Arizona 6-1, 6-3 to capture the 2001 9th Annual William and Mary Invitational. This tournament welcomed many top rated athletes including Ivy rival Alice Pirsu of UPenn, Lena Sherbakov of William and Mary and Janet Bergman of Wake Forest.
For Krishnamurthy, who missed a good deal of competition last season due to an injury, this tournament was important because it help maintain her 33rd the country national ranking. Krishnamurthy, now a junior, stormed onto the collegiate tennis scene her freshman year taking both the Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Year honors.
"She's back," said head coach Lousie Gengler. "This a good sign for her and I'm happy to see her playing well again."
