Princeton, N.J. - Theresa Sherry's (So. Baltimore, Md.) lone goal that came in the remaining minutes of the match is all the Tigers would need to defeat Columbia 1-0. Sherry curved a corner kick in from the right corner flag with 5:33 remain on the second-half clock. Princeton moves to 5-0 for the season, as Columbia drops to 5-2. Princeton and UPenn (4-0-1) currently remain the only two undefeated Ivy League teams. The Tigers have outscored their opponents 16-0.
Play was fairly equal in the first half as both teams battled to get shots off. Princeton registered five shots in the opening half as Columbia managed to take two shots. "The first twenty minutes were great," says head coach Julie Shackford. "We were playing well, but Columbia did a good job of getting back in the game." With five minutes remaining in the first half, Columbia's Lindsay Holmes fired a dangerous ball at Princeton's keeper, Catherine Glenn (Sr. Jacksonville, Fla.) Glenn wrapped the ball up and registered her first save of the night. Both Princeton and Columbia stepped up their offense in the second-half, Princeton took seven shots, Columbia took four. One of Princeton's shots came off the foot of Sherry. With 84:27 minutes ticked off the clock, Sherry curved a corner kick in from the right side to put the Tigers up 1-0. The ball sailed over the keeper's hands and hit the left side of the goal. Columbia staged a threat late in the game getting off two shots yet the Tigers were able to hold on to the victory.
"I'm pleased with the win," says Shackford. "It's always good to get a win at home especially against a quality Ivy team like Columbia."
Princeton has registered 28 corner kicks this season while only giving up ten in five games. Sherry's goal tonight is the second goal that the Tigers have scored on an untouched corner kick. In the season opener, Heather Deerin (Jr. Livingston, N.J.) curved in a corner kick against Iowa State.
