Princeton, N.J. - Both senior Rikki Racela and Dennis Bakke scored touchdowns for the second straight week and for the second straight week it would not be enough as Princeton sufferers its second defeat of the season, dropping a 36-15 decision to Pennsylvania at Frelinghuysen Field on Friday night.
The Tigers fell behind early after Penn's Patrick Monagha scored on a seven-yard run less than five minutes into the contest. Racela, however, answered with a four-yard plunge and the score was even at 7-7. The game would remain tied going into the second quarter of play. It was in the second quarter that turnovers wretched an otherwise solid Princeton attack.
Monagha would cap a two-play drive set up by Princeton's first fumble of the night, giving the Quakers the lead once again. The ensuing drive would lead to a punt and another Tiger fumble that placed the ball on the one-yard line for quarterback James Donapel, who sneaked across the line, giving Penn a 21-7 halftime lead.
The third quarter would bring only two field goals, both by Penn's Evan Nolan as the Quakers extended their margin to 27-7. Princeton would finally answer Penn's 29 unanswered points with a 27-yard scamper by Bakke, closing a six play, 65-yard drive. The two-point conversion was successful, but the Tigers fell to 0-2 while Penn remained unbeaten at 2-0.
The Tigers finished with 198 yards of total offense and split the time of possession. It was four lost fumbles and an interception that made the difference. Bakke ended the game with 92 passing yards and led the team in rushing with 65 on the ground. Sophomore Adam Farren led the receiving corps with six catches for 74 yards, freshman Frank Langston caught three balls for 28 yards.
Princeton begins conference play next Friday, Oct. 11 at Army while Penn has its bye week.
