No. 11 Providence Shuts Down Tigers

Mike Patton scored Princeton's lone goal as the men's ice hockey team dropped an 8-1 decision to Providence Sunday afternoon at Schneider Arena on the campus of Providence College.
Providence opened the scoring at 12:50 of the first period when Peter Zingoni scored on a delayed penalty. Zingoni came out from the corner and attempted to stuff the puck past Princeton goaltender Eric Leroux. Leroux made the initial save but Zingoni picked up his own rebound and scored. The Friars extended the lead to 2-0 four minutes later on a shorthanded goal. Jonathon Goodwin fed Torry Gajda on a 2-on-1 for the tally.
Princeton got on the board at 12:05 of period two when Mike Patton shot the puck home for his first goal of the season. Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer skated out from behind the Friar net and attempted to stuff the puck under Providence goaltender Bobby Goepfert. Goepfert stopped the initial attempt but Patton jumped on the rebound to make the score 2-1. Mark Masters also assisted on the goal. The Friars reclaimed the two-goal lead at 3:26 of the third period when Jon DiSalvatore scored an unassisted goal on a delayed penalty. DiSalvatore fired a shot from the right circle that deflected past Tiger goaltender Trevor Clay. Providence made it 4-1 at 9:15 when Devin Rask one-timed a shot past Clay. Rask scored his second goal of the game four minutes later to make it 5-1.
Providence added three late goals.
Princeton (0-2-0) returns to action next Friday night when the Tigers visit Colgate for their ECAC opener at 7:00 p.m. The following night, Princeton visits Cornell.
