Yale scored four third period goals to put Saturday night's game out of reach and claim a 6-0 win over the Tigers in men's ice hockey at Ingalls Rink in New Haven. Sebastian Borza scored his first career goal on a one-timer in front late in the third period.
The two teams skated to a scoreless first period with Yale controlling much of the play. The first 10 minutes of the stanza were back-and-forth with Yale holding a 4-3 shot advantage midway through the period. However, Yale took over from there, outshooting the Tigers 10-1 in the second half of the period. Princeton goaltender Trevor Clay stopped all shots that period, including five quality Yale scoring opportunities.
Yale broke through in the second period scoring goals on the 20th and 21st shots of the game. At 9:38 of period two, Vin Hellemeyer one-timed a Nick Deschenes pass past Clay for his third goal of the season. Just over four minutes later, the Bulldogs connected again following a scrum in front of Clay. Evan Wax banged home a loose puck for his eighth goal of the season. Ryan Steeves and Christian Jensen posted assists. Yale stormed out early in the third period, scoring twice in the period's first 26 seconds. First Nick Deschenes scored an unassisted goal on a breakaway at the 10-second mark and 16 seconds later a Chris Higgins shot found the back of the Princeton net just inside the far post. Yale extended its lead to five goals at 3:08 when Hellemeyer tallied his second goal of the night on the power-play. Mike Klema closed out the scoring for Yale at 14:15 of the third period.
Borza scored his first career goal with 2:33 remaining to put Princeton on the board. Dustin Sproat and Patrick Neundorfer added assists on the power-play goal.
Cohen made 23 saves in earning his sixth win of the season, while Clay stopped 33 shots as his record fell to 1-3-0.
The Tigers (1-9-0) Massachusetts tomorrow afternoon for the first time since former Tiger coach Don Cahoon took over the rein at UMass two seasons ago.
