As Heather Deerin and Esmeralda Negron added another honor to their already accomplished resumes, the entire Princeton women's soccer team found itself with a consolation prize, of sorts.
Deerin was named a first-team All-Mid-Atlantic Regional selection by the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America. Negron was a second-team all-region selection.
For the Tigers, there was the satisfaction of knowing that Penn State, the team that eliminated Princeton in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, knocked off Virginia and Connecticut to advance to this weekend's Final Four at the University of Texas. Penn State, who had three first-team all-region selections, will play Portland in one semifinal, while North Carolina will face Santa Clara in the other.
Deerin and Negron were both named first-team All-Ivy League at season's end. Deerin, a defender, became the third women's soccer and 34th athlete in Princeton history to be a four-time, first-team All-Ivy selection. Negron, a sophomore, led Princeton with eight goals and one assist for 17 points.
Princeton finished its season 13-3-1 and won the first outright Ivy League championship in program history while winning at least a share of the league title for the third straight year.
Princeton fell to Penn State 2-0 in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
