Women's Tennis Defeats No. 52 Penn State

PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton won four out of six singles matches, including two in three sets, to defeat No. 52 Penn State 5-2 in women's tennis action at Jadwin Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon.
Princeton won two out of three doubles matches to capture the singles points. Kristi Watson (Sr., Prairie Village, KA) and Priya Bhupathi (Sr., Staten Island, NY) were defeated, 8-3, by Rebecca Ho and Janelle Perez at No. 1 doubles. Avantika Bhargava (So., Franklin Lakes, NJ) and Kavitha Krishnamurthy (Jr., Oakville, ONT) picked up a 9-7 win over Judy Wang and Sarah Spence at No. 2 doubles, while Stephanie Berg (Fr., Los Angeles, CA) and Alex Kobishyn (So., Lynbrook, NY) defeated Leigh Ann Merryman and Megan Marton, 8-5.
Krishnamurthy defeated Ho, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and Bhupathi earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Marton at No. 3 singles but Watson and Berg needed three sets to get past their opponents. Watson defeated Maaria Husain, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 at the No. 2 position and Berg dropped the first set, 6-2, against Wang but came back to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-3 to take the match.
Penn State won the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches. Merryman defeated Princeton's Jackie Arcario (So., Longwood, FL) 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 and Jessica McKeown picked up a 7-6 (5), 6-1 victory over Mateya McCoy (So., Key Biscayne, FL) at No. 6.
Princeton will host No. 42 Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. The Tigers will then travel to meet No. 2 Duke in Durham, NC on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. They will face North Carolina State on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. before returning home.
