HANOVER, N.H. - Dave Stathos (Sr., Longueuil, QUE) finished with a career-high 44 saves as Princeton and Dartmouth skated to a 1-1 tie in men's hockey action on Friday night in front of a crowd of 4,500 at Thompson Arena in Hanover. Princeton is now 8-16-2, 7-10-2 in the ECAC. Dartmouth is 12-9-5, 9-5-5 in the conference.
Dartmouth was knocking on the door for most of the first period, but Stathos would not let the Big Green in, posting 16 saves, including stoning several point-blank shots. The Tigers were outshot 16-9 in the first period, but the game remained scoreless going into the first intermission.
Dartmouth got on the board to at 1:57 of the second period, and the tennis balls came raining down. Play was stopped for about 15 minutes while the cleanup took place after Chris Baldwin gave the Big Green a 1-0 lead with his 10th goal of he season. Lee Stempniak and Brian Van Abel assisted on the goal. Chris Owen and George Parros each had great opportunities in the ninth minute of the second period, but the Tigers could get the puck past Dartmouth netminder Nick Boucher. David Del Monte and Dan Hursh crashed the net on a breakaway at the midway point of the second period but Dartmouth held on to its lead through the end of the second period.
George Parros tied the game at 1-1 at the 4:16 mark of the third period to cancel Dartmouth's bid for its first shutout over Princeton since a 9-0 win at Hobey Baker Rink on Jan. 16, 1954. Parros fired a shot through a screen from the right circle that beat Boucher to the stick side and into the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season. Del Monte and Matt Maglione assisted on the goal as the game remained tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation.
The two teams played at a frenetic pace during the overtime and each had so tremendous scoring opportunities. Brad Parsons, David Schneider and Josh Roberts created the best opportunity at the four-minute mark of the extra period but could not capitalize and Darthmouth came right back the other way. Several Big Green skaters crashed the net but somehow Stathos was able to survive the scrum and keep the puck out of the net.
Stathos posted 44 saves, including 16 in the opening period and five in the overtime period. Boucher finished the night with 26 saves.
Princeton will play its final road game of the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 23 when it travels to Gutterson Fieldhouse for a 7 p.m. game vs. Vermont. The Tigers will close out the regular season by hosting Brown and Harvard on March 1-2. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
