Wrestling Drops 23-13 Decision To No. 8 Penn

PRINCETON, NJ - Princeton's Greg Parker, ranked sixth in the nation at 174 lbs. earned a 12-6 win over No. 5 Rick Springman, but the Tigers dropped a 23-13 decision to Pennsylvania in wrestling action on Saturday night in Dillon Gymnasium.
The Quakers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with Matt Feast's 12-9 win over Joe Looke at heavyweight. Looke held a 9-6 lead with 20 seconds remaining, but Feast scored a five point move and earned a point for riding time to come away with the victory.
Princeton swept the next three bouts. Brian Kirschboum earned a 10-1 decision over Mike Reno at 125 lbs. John Knorring jumped ouut to an 8-0 lead on Jeff Eveleth at 133 lbs and held on for a 10-4 win. Juan Venturi clinched a 13-7 win over Brett Vasnderveer at 141 lbs with a takedown and a nearfall three for Princeton's third-straight win. No. 10 Joe Henson won by fall over the Tigers' Milo Adams in just 11 seconds to pull Penn to within one point at 10-9.
The Quakers' senior All-America Yoshi Nakamura took a 10-3 first period lead ocer Albert Pendleton on the strength of five takedowns en route to a 21-8 win.
At 165 lbs., the Quakers Greg Hallahan gave Penn another three team points as he hung on to Jon Bunt in the tie-braker to win 7-7. Hallahan scored two reversals and a takedown in the third to tie up Bunt's two early takedowns and three escapes, putting Penn ahead 16-10.
In a battle of two nationally ranked wrestlers, No. 6 Parker of Princeton defeated No. 5 Rick Springman, 12-6. Springman scored two early takedowns in the first, where Parker picked up a point for Springman locking hands, and scored a reversal knotting it at four. The second period, spent almost entirely on the mat in a scramble, saw Parker pick up three nearfall points. Springman opened the third period with a takedown, still trailing 8-6 before Parker scored a takedown and a riding time point to win 12-6.
Penn's Marcus Schontube and Mike Faust won their bouts at 184 lbs and 197 lbs respectively. Schontube pulled out a 13-1 major decision over Anthony DeBartolo. Princeton's Matt Fisher dropped a 5-3 decision to Faust in overtime. The score was knotted at 3-3 at the end of regulation but Faust scored a takedown with six seconds remaining to give hime the 5-3 win.
