Baltimore, Md. - With chilling temperatures and an overcast grey sky, Princeton's offense was never quite able to heat up, falling to Johns Hopkins 8-5 in front of 4,631 fans at Homewood field.
In the season opener for both teams, Hopkins opened the scoring at the 13:38 of the first period, when freshman midfielder Kyle Harrison beat Princeton goalie Julian Gould, giving the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead. That mark held up until Princeton senior Mark Pellegrino tied things with an unassisted goal with 1:33 remaining in the first period. The score was Pellegrino's third of his career and first since his sophomore campaign. The second period saw but one goal, scored by Hopkins' Kyle Barrie, another freshman, at 9:46. The two teams would continue the defensive struggle and enter halftime with JHU ahead 2-1.
"Offensively, we played the worst half I have seen in a long long time," said Princeton head coach Bill Tierney. "So going into halftime only down one goal, we felt really good." The second half started much like the first, with Hopkins scoring shortly after play resumed. Matt Hanna took a feed from Kevin Boland and beat Gould to put JHU up 3-1. Again the Tigers answered, on an extra man goal by Owen Daly, to cut the lead to 3-2, just two minutes later. Hopkins started to pull away at the end of the third period, scoring twice in the final five minutes to take a 5-2 lead into the final period. Bobby Bensen and Kevin Boland each scored to open the fourth period and the Hopkins lead was seemingly safe at 7-2 with nine minutes remaining.
The Tigers however, would score the next three goals, an extra man goal by Brendan Tierney, and a pair of unassisted goals by Brad Dumont and Ryan Boyle, to cut the lead to 7-5 with just under one minute remaining. As was the case all afternoon, Harrison won the crucial face off for the Blue Jays, and added his second goal of the afternoon :34 remaining, to finish up the scoring.
"It was not until the clock was running down that we played harder and we played better," said Tierney. "It was just a little to little, a little to late."
A bright spot for Princeton was the play of junior goalie Julian Gould, who made 14 save on the afternoon. "The one question mark we had coming into the game was if Gould would make saves for us," said Tierney. "Julian played great, as did Hopkins goalie (Murtha).
With the loss, Princeton drops to 0-1 on the season, while Hopkins improved to 1-0. Princeton travels to Charlottesville Va. On March 9 to face UVA. Hopkins next travels to Hofstra on March 9.
