Charlottesville, Va. - Freshman John Christmas had two goals and three assists and classmate Joe Yevoli added three goals as No. 6 Virginia defeated No. 4 Princeton 13-11 in front of 1,554 on a rainy day at Klockner Stadium.
The victory was Virginia's fourth straight in Charlottesville against Princeton, who has not won at UVa since 1994. Since the start of the 1996 season, Princeton is 4-5 against UVa and 76-6 against all other opponents.
Princeton slipped to 0-2 on the young season after dropping its opener to Johns Hopkins a week ago. Princeton, the defending NCAA champion, has its home opener next Saturday (March 16) against Hofstra.
"We played better today than we did last week," said Princeton coach Bill Tierney. "I thought we were better on offense. They played a good game too."
Virginia (2-1) led 9-6 in the third quarter before goals by Damien Davis, Brad Dumont and B.J. Prager tied it at 9-9 with 3:03 remaining. The Cavaliers answered exactly one minute later on Christmas' second goal, and they would never trail again. Princeton trailed 13-10 midway through the fourth quarter, but Dan Clark's second goal of the day cut it to two with 6:29 to go. Princeton would get two more opportunities to tie before Virginia was able to run out the clock, aided by three penalties against Princeton in the final 1:17.
Neither team had more than a one-goal lead until midway through the second quarter, by which time there had been four ties and three lead changes. UVa then scored three straight to break a 4-4 tie and begin to take command at 7-4.
Clark, Prager and Sean Hartofilis had two goals each for Princeton, while Owen Daly and Ryan Boyle had a goal and two assists.
Prager moved over the 100-point mark for his career and now has 86 goals and 15 assists.
