Softball Dominates Drexel and Temple in Season Openers, 12-2 and 13-1

Philadelphia, Pa. - Wendy Bingham (So., La Crescenta, Calif.) pitching for Princeton in the season opener, earned her first win of the season as the Tigers defeated the Dragons of Drexel, 12-2. The game ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule. In the second game of the evening the Tigers topped the Owls of Temple 13-1 in six innings. Temple faced Princeton's ace, Brie Galicinao (Sr., Stockton, Calif.).
Bingham allowed only four hits and struck out three batters as the Tigers picked up their first victory of the season. Kristin Del Calvo (So., Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) blasted a two-run homerun and freshman, Melissa Finley, (London, Ontario) three-run shot over the fence was her first collegiate homerun. Galicinao the Ivy League's Player and Pitcher of the Year in 2001, made her first appearance on the mound in the second game today. Galicinao struck out six Temple batters allowing only three hits. Finley hit her second home run of the day in the fourth inning and tallied four total hits against the owls.
Kim Veenstra (Sr., Hawthorne, N.J.) had three hits in the first game and two in the match against Temple including a fifth inning homerun. Junior, Erin Valocsik (Budd Lake, N.J.) started in right field for the Tigers against the owls and had three hits. Starting behind the plate in both games for the Tigers was freshman, Ty Ries (Madison lake, Minn.)
The Tigers will once again face Temple at 11:30 tomorrow and Drexel at 1:30.
