Atlanta, Ga. - Georgia Tech's Felicia Coursey scored in the bottom of the seventh as the Yellow Jackets defeated Princeton 5-4 in the first game of today's doubleheader. The Tigers failed to produce at the plate in the nightcap as Jacket pitcher, Jessica Sallinger held Princeton to four hits, shutting out the Tigers, 7-0.
The Tigers went ahead early in the first game when lead-off Kristin Lueke singled and Wendy Bingham walked to put runners at first and second with no outs in the first inning. Brie Galicinao picked up to RBIs, scoring Lueke and Bingham with a double into centerfield to give Princeton a 2-0 lead at the end of the first. Lueke batted in Lauren Palmer in the second and Kristin Del Calvo smashed a ball over the center field fence in fourth as the Tigers went up 4-0. The Jackets began their comeback in the bottom of the fourth when Mimi Utt hit her own single homerun. The Jackets added three more in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game and Coursey had the game winning run in the seventh.
Galicinao was the losing pitcher in the first match and slipped to 1-3 on the season. She allowed five runs on nine hits, striking out only one batter in seven innings.
Sallinger held the Tigers scoreless in the second match as the Jackets cruised to 7-0 victory. Despite a strong performance at the plate by Bingham, who batted two-for-three, the Tigers failed to put a run up on the score board, making it the first time this season that Princeton has been shutout.
Melissa Finely gave up six runs on seven hits on four innings of action. Finley's season record slips to 1-1.
"We didn't make any adjustments offensively in the second game," said head coach Maureen Davies. "We need to come out tomorrow ready to play two solid seven-inning games both offensively and defensively. That's what this week is about, playing some tough competition and bringing it all together."
Princeton currently stands a 4-4 on the season and Georgia Tech improves to 21-7. Princeton will face Georgia State in a doubleheader scheduled to begin tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
