PRINCETON, NJ - Princeton cruised to a 7-0 win over Rutgers in women's tennis action on Thursday afternoon at the Lenz Tennis Center. The win gives the Tigers momentum going into Saturday's Ivy League opener against Penn.
Princeton got things going by sweeping the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead going into singles action. Priya Bhupathi and Kristi Watson handed Carissa Sommerland and AmandaTravlos an 8-5 loss at first doubles. Avantika Bhargava and Kavitha Krishnamurthy defeated Jennifer Hellier and Andrea Weckstein 8-1 at second doubles, while Stephanie Berg and Alex Kobishyn completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win over Kaitlin Link and Helen Magomedova at third doubles.
The Tigers did not miss a beat in singles action. Krishnamurthy won 6-0, 6-0 over Sommerland at the No. 1 position. Watson defeated Hellier 6-1, 6-3 at second singles and Bhupathi held on for a 6-2, 7-5 win over Weckstein at the third position. Berg needed three sets to get past Travlos. Berg dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, but took the second set 6-2 and clinched the point with a 12-10 win in the tiebreaker. Jackie Arcario picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win over Magomedova at fifth singles, and Mateya McCoy rounded out the action with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Link at the sixth position.
Princeton will host Pennsylvania at noon on Saturday, March 30 to open the Ivy League portion of its schedule. Weather permitting the match will be held at the Lenz Tennis Center.
