Pennsylvania, Pa. - Kim Veenstra's two-run blast in the first game of today's doubleheader against Penn, would be all the Tigers needed, as they went on to defeat the Quakers 2-0. Princeton won the nightcap, 4-2. Princeton improves to 12-12 on the season and with the two wins at Penn, the Tigers stand at 2-0 in an early Ivy season. Penn slips to 10-16, 0-2 in the Ivy League.
Brie Galicinao was the winning pitcher in the first game, striking out eight Quakers while allowing only four hits. The Quakers have not had much luck against Galicinao in the last few seasons. Prior to today's matches, Galicinao had thrown two consecutive perfect games against the Quakers.
Veenstra put the Tigers up 2-0 in the third when she homered over the left field fence, scoring Galicinao. Galicinao had reached first on a fielder's choice. Penn opened the bottom of the seventh, putting runners at first and second with one out, yet was unable to bring anyone across the plate.
Princeton opened a 3-0 lead in the third inning of the second game when Galicinao's single into right field scored Jen Neil and Kristin Lueke. Neil and Lueke had each singled to get on base. Becky Nemec's single scored Galicinao later in the inning. Galicinao's double in the fourth scored Neil to put the Tigers up 4-0.
Penn posted two runs in the bottom of the sixth yet was unable to catch the Tigers.
Wendy Bingham was the winning pitcher in the second game, striking out four Quaker batters and giving up six hits.
"It was a great start to our Ivy season, coming away with two wins," say head coach Maureen Davies. "We had good overall team effort and we played well defensively, but in the future, we need to do a better job executing at the plate."
Princeton will face the Wildcats of Villanova on Thursday, April 4 in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
