Princeton, N.J. - Kristin Del Calvo tied an NCAA record with three home runs and picked up five RBIs in the second game of today's doubleheader, as the Tigers defeated Yale 10-1. In an eight-inning contest, Princeton defeated the Bulldogs, 2-1 in the first match. Princeton improves to 27-15, 11-1 Ivy on the season as Yale slips to 18-18-1, 4-6 Ivy.
Yale's Jesseka Bartholomew homered in the first inning of the first game to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead.
Brie Galicinao started the bottom of the first with a double into centerfield. Kristin Lueke moved Galicinao with a slow roller to the second baseman. Galicinao scored on an error to tie the score at 1-1. Princeton and Yale went on to play six scoreless innings of softball, sending the game into extra innings. Lueke reached first on a single to give Princeton a base runner with one out in the eighth. Del Calvo reached first on a fielder's choice, but Lueke was out on the play. With two outs, and Nicole Davida pinch running for Del Calvo, Kim Veenstra's single moved Davida to second. Becky Nemec's double into left-center scored Davida for the game-winning run.
Galicinao was the winning pitcher in the game. She had seven strike outs and allowed five hits in eight innings of work. She improves to 14-6 on the season.
Del Calvo put the Tigers up 1-0 in the first inning of the second game with a solo home run over the centerfield fence. Yale evened the score at 1-1 in the second when Shayna Filson sent one over the centerfield wall.
Princeton used a six hit, six run second inning to open a 7-1 lead. Erin Valocsik scored the first run of the inning when she came home on a wild pitch. Melissa Finley scored off a single hit by Wendy Bingham. Galicinao's double moved Bingham to third and scored Sarah Jane White. Lueke's doubled to left field scoring Bingham and Galicinao and Del Calvo's second home run of the game also scored Lueke.
The Tigers added three more runs in the fourth inning and Yale was unable to answer in the fifth as the game ended early. Finley was the winning pitcher in the game. She struck out four batters and allowed only two hits.
With a sweep of tomorrow's doubleheader against Brown, Princeton can clinch at least a share of the Ivy League title. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. on 1895 field.
The Tigers have not won a softball Ivy League title since 1996. Del Calvo has shattered the single season homerun record. She currently stands with 12 this season. The previous record, held by three different athletes, was seven. "It was a little close for comfort in the first game," says head coach Maureen Davies, "but we came out strong in the second game. We played well both defensively and offensively and we are ready for tomorrow."
