Women's Tennis Posts 6-1 Win Over Cornell

PRINCETON, NJ - The Princeton women's tennis team closed out its 2002 season with a 6-1 win over Cornell on in Ivy League action on Sunday afternoon at Reis Tennis Center. The Tigers finish with a 9-9 record, including a 4-3 mark in Ivy action. The Big Red finished the season at 11-9 overall, 1-6 in Ivy play.
Princeton won two out of three doubles matches to take and early 1-0 lead in the match. The team of seniors Priya Bhupathi and Kristi Watson defeated Kate Sternberg and Laura Leigh Tallent 8-2 at second doubles, but the Big Red came away with wins in the other two pairings. Suzanne Wright and Akane Kokubo defeated Kavitha Krishnamurthy and Avantika Bhargava 8-4 at first doubles. Stephanie Berg and Alex Kobishyn's 9-8 (3) win over Nicole Chiu and Erika Takeuchi's clinched the point for the Tigers.
Princeton cruised in the singles competition, winning five out of six matches. Krishnamurthy, ranked #51 in the nation continued to dominate with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Wright at the number one position. Watson knocked off Tallent 6-4, 6-0 at second singles, while classmate Bhupathi defeated Kokubo 7-5, 6-0 at third singles. Stephanie Berg and Mateya McCoy each picked up identical 6-2, 6-3 wins at fourth and sixth singles respectively. Cornell's only point of the afternoon came with Piper Lucas' 6-3, 6-1 win over Jackie Arcario at fifth singles. Princeton 6, Cornell 1 Doubles 1. Suzanne Wright/Akane Kukubo def.
