Big Tiger Hits Leaves Cornell Softball in the Red

Princeton, N.J. - Melissa Finley's two-run shot over the left field fence put the Tigers up 2-0 against the Big Red of Cornell in today's first contest. That would be all Princeton would need as the Tigers picked up the 2-0 victory. Kristin Del Calvo's fifth inning grand slam highlighted a 9-1 Tiger victory in the second game of the day. Princeton improves to 17-13 on the season and remains undefeated in league play at 6-0.
Erin Valocsik singled up the middle in the second inning of the first game to give the Tigers a runner with one out. The next batter up was Finley who hammered her fourth home run of the season, over the left field fence, to open up a 2-0 lead for Princeton. Princeton would need no more. Brie Galicinao, pitching for the Tigers in the first game, held the Big Red to only one hit and kept Cornell off the scoreboard. With the victory, Galicinao picked up her fifth consecutive shutout, a streak that stretches back to Princeton's doubleheader against Rutgers on March, 27. In today's contest, she struck out five big red batters. Catching for Galicinao every game this season has been freshman, Ty Ries.
The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second game, scoring one run in the first inning and two in the second. Cornell narrowed the gap in the fourth posting one run and threatened to add more in the fifth. Sandra Alvarez doubled to lead of the fifth for Cornell and moved to third on a fly ball hit deep into the outfield. Erin Sweeney grounded back to Galicinao, who had come in to relieve Finley. Alvarez tried to come home, but Galicinao threw the ball home to Ries who had the plate covered, and was called out, keeping Cornell off the board in the fifth.
Del Calvo's sixth homerun of the season was a big one, a grand slam that put the Tigers up 8-1 in the fifth inning. Valocsik and Wendy Bingham each singled to lead off the inning. Galicinao was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs. Kristin Lueke's single scored Valocsik and kept the bases loaded. Del Calvo, batting in the third spot, sent the ball over the right field fence for her second grandslam of her career.
Becky Nemec doubled to lead off the sixth and Valocsik knocked her in, as the Tiger wrapped up the game, 9-1 in six innings. Lueke went two-for-three at the plate with three RBIs and Del Calvo went two-for-two with five RBIs, in the second game.
"Things are starting to come together nicely," says head coach Maureen Davies. "We are playing good defense and have made good adjustments up at the plate. We had a great weekend overall and it is exciting to see players stepping up and our bats coming alive."
Finley was the pitcher in the second game, striking out one Big Red batter and allowing four hits. Galicinao picked up the save, pitching two innings, striking out two batters.
Not since the 1996 season, has Princeton started 6-0 in the Ivy League. The Tigers returns to action on Tuesday, April 9 at 3:00 p.m. when they host the Broncs of Rider.
