Princeton, N.J. - Brie Galicinao was the game-winning pitcher and also led the Tigers at the plate, batting 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored, as Princeton defeated Army, 5-1 in the first game of the doubleheader. The Tigers scored all three runs in the fourth inning of the nightcap, to earn the 3-1 victory. Princeton improves to 34-16 on the season, while Army, the 2002 Patriot League champion, slips to 30-17-1.
The Tigers used a three-run two-out rally in the fourth inning of the first game to open a 3-0 lead midway through the contest. Becky Nemec scored the first run of the inning when she was hit home by Erin Valocsik. Nemec, racing home, avoided the tag of Army's catcher, Becky Tsuchiya and was called safe. Sarah Jane White doubled into center field to score Valocsik and came home when Kristin Del Calvo hit a ball down the left field line for her own double. Galicinao opened the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run over the center field fence and Nicole Davida scored the second run of the inning when she came home on an error by the second baseman.
Army's Anne McClain's solo shot in the seventh put the Black Knights on the board, but Princeton held onto the 5-1 victory. Galicinao picked up her 17th win of the season, striking out seven Army batters and allowing four hits.
Army took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap when, with the bases loaded, McClain walked, scoring Gina Fox.
The Tigers scored two runs in the fourth when Kristin Lueke's triple scored Wendy Bingham and Nicole Davida. Both Davida and Bingham had singled to get on base. Nemec's single to left field scored Lueke and the Tigers took a 3-1 lead. It would be all Princeton needed to earn the victory.
Bingham was the winning pitcher, striking out seven Black Knights and allowing six hits. With the win, Bingham improves to 8-4 on the season.
The Tigers will compete in the NCAA Regionals on May 16-19. The selection show is to be aired on Sunday, May 12 at 9;00 p.m. on ESPNews.
