Softball to Face Minnesota in Opening Round of NCAA Championships

Princeton, N.J. - It was announced Sunday evening that Princeton will face Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn. for its first game in the opening round of the 2002 NCAA Division I Softball Championships on Thursday, May 16. Princeton has been given the No. 4 seed, Minnesota enters the Regionals as the No. 3 seed. Princeton was granted the Ivy League's automatic bid to the championships after capturing its first Ivy title since 1996.
Also in the Princeton's region is national powerhouse, Arizona, the No. 1 seed in the bracket. Arizona will face No. 6 seed Boston University. No. 2 seeded DePaul will face the No. 5 seed Penn State.
"We are really excited about the bracket and the seeding," says head coach Maureen Davies. "It will be a chance to compete against the top teams in the country, and it is great opportunity to play great softball."
Princeton, if they defeat Minnesota, will face the winner of the DePaul - Penn State game, on Friday, May 17. If Minnesota defeats Princeton, the Tigers will face the winner of the match between the loser of Arizona - B.U and the loser of DePaul - Penn State, on Friday, May 17.
Princeton is the only team in the tournament from the Ivy League.
In all 48 teams will compete at eight regions in the opening round of the championships. The winner from each of the eight regions will advance to compete at the 2002 Women's College World Series hosted in Oklahoma City, Okla.
