Minneapolis, Minn - Brie Galicinao struck out eleven batters but the Tigers fell to the Golden Gophers of Minnesota 2-1 to open the 2002 NCAA softball championships. Princeton is competing in a six-team regional tournament hosted by Minnesota, the winner of which advances to the Women's World Series. Princeton slips to 34-17 and will face the winner of the Boston University - Penn State game. Minnesota improves to 38-19 and will face DePaul tomorrow.
Kristin Del Calvo reached first on a fielder's choice and advanced to second when Kim Veenstra walked to put Princeton runners at first and second with two outs in the first inning. Del Calvo scored from second when the shortstop committed an error on a ball hit off the bat of Becky Nemec to put the Tigers up 1-0 early in the contest. Jordanne Nygren evened the score, for the Golden Gophers at 1-1 with a solo home run over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the first.
The Gophers loaded the bases with one out in the third with Nygren at the plate. Brie Galicinao struck out Nygren but Erin Wallace scored on an error to put the Gophers up 2-1 in the third.
Galicinao singled to the shortstop and Kristin Lueke singled to left field to put runners at first and second, with two outs, in the top of the fifth. Del Calvo popped up to the shortstop to end the inning.
"It was great game from both teams and a tough loss for us," said head coach Maureen Davies. "Brie rose to the occasion and threw one of her best games this year. We played well but we just left too many runners on base." The Tigers left six base runners on for the game. "We've got one game under our belts and now we are getting ready for tomorrow," added Davies.
Galicinao was the losing pitcher, striking out 11 Gophers and allowing four hits.
Princeton will face the winner of the Penn State - Boston University at 2:30 p.m. on Friday May 17.
