Princeton, N.J. - After one of the best seasons in recent memory, the Princeton men's soccer team is set to defend its Ivy title with the start of the 2002 season. The Tigers open the year this Friday, Sept. 13 against the same team that knocked them out of the NCAA tournament a year ago. Princeton and Fairleigh Dickinson square off in the second game of a double-header at Lourie-Love Field with an approximate start time of 7:30 p.m.
Soccer action begins at 5 p.m. with Pennsylvania and Seton Hall kicking things off. The Tigers and Knights follow in what is expected to be a very good game. Princeton defeated FDU 1-0 during the regular season in 2001. The Knights returned the favor in tournament play, winning 2-1 on Princeton's own turf.
The Tigers graduated seven seniors off of last year's roster, including Ivy League Player of the Year Mike Nugent and Roper Award winner Matt Behncke. Both Behncke and Nugent were taken in the MLS draft after the season.
Princeton, the defending Ivy League champions, returns All-Ivy goalkeeper Jason White, who also holds the school record for both career shutouts and shutouts in a single season. The Tigers set a team record with 10 shutouts en route to a 10-3-1 finish last year. White, along with senior Bob Nye and junior Jeff Hare, will captain the Tigers this season.
Fairleigh Dickinson, Princeton, Penn and Seton Hall return to Lourie-Love on Sunday, Sept. 15 for two more games. FDU and Penn will play at noon and Princeton will play Seton Hall at 2:30 to conclude the weekend's action.
Admission to each day's games is $6 for an adult and $4 for a student.
