Syracuse, N.Y. - Esmeralda Negron and Emily Behncke each scored goals and Princeton took advantage of an own goal in a 3-1 win over Syracuse Wednesday night.
The win improved Princeton to 10-1-3 as the Tigers reached double figures in wins for the fifth straight year. Prior to that, Princeton had double-figure wins five times in the first 19 seasons in program history.
Syracuse fell to 9-8-1. The matchup was the first ever between the schools.
"It was a good win on the road," said Princeton coach Julie Shackford. "I thought our first half was our best half all season long. We have good momentum heading into the last part of the season." Negron started the scoring on an assist from Maura Gallagher just 5:18 into the game. For Negron, it was her Ivy League-leading 12th goal of the season, and it moved the junior within one goal of tying the Princeton single-season record, set by Susan Mooney in 1981.
Negron's goal was the 26th of her career, which moved her into second place at Princeton in career goals scored. Negron needs 15 more to tie Linda DeBoer's school record, set from 1982-85.
Princeton built its lead to 2-0 in the 23rd minute. Janine Willis crossed a ball into the box, and it was headed into the goal by one of the Syracuse defenders.
The Orange struck for their lone goal when Shana Thomas scored five minutes after intermission, but Princeton answered in the 78th minute when Emily Behncke scored on a feed from Elizabeth Pillion. It was Behncke's seventh goal of the season, second behind Negron on the team.
Princeton's final two regular season games are both in the Ivy League, as the Tigers host Cornell Saturday (4) before playing at Penn the following Saturday. Princeton, 3-1-1 in the league, trails Dartmouth (4-0-1) by one game in the league standings. Dartmouth finishes its league season with games at Harvard and home against Cornell.
