Esmeralda Negron scored one goal and assisted on another to lead Princeton to a 2-1 win over Cornell in an Ivy League women's soccer game at Lourie-Love Field Saturday afternoon. The victory, on senior day, completed Princeton's second perfect home season at 7-0-0, matching the feat of only the 1989 Tigers.
Negron's goal was her 13th of the season, tying Susan Mooney's 22-year-old school record for goals in a season. It was also the 27th of her career, which moves Negron, a junior, into sole possession of second-place on Princeton's career goals list. She trails only Linda DeBoer, who scored 41 goals from 1982 to 1985.
"It's great to tie a record that's stood for so long," said Negron, born more than a year after Mooney set her record. "It wasn't something I was thinking about during the game. It was an important game for us, and I was glad we won." Negron's headed in a cross from Rochelle Willis 21 minutes into the game and three minutes after Cornell had taken the lead when Kara Ishikawa chipped a Whitney Hughes ball over Princeton goalkeeper Emily Vogelzang to make it 1-0 Big Red. Ishikawa's goal came on the only shot of the day for Cornell (7-6-2, 1-4-1 Ivy League).
Princeton (11-1-3, 4-1-1 Ivy League) took the lead 14 minutes later, when Kristina Fontanez headed a ball into the box towards Negron, who headed it back to Fontanez, who then headed it into the goal. Princeton then hit the post four times, including once by Negron on a drive from 15 yards and once by Liz Bell on a penalty kick.
For the game, Princeton outshot Cornell 24-1. The Big Red had its best opportunity to get the tying goal end when Rochelle Willis stripped the ball from Shannon Fraser outside the box with about five minutes remaining.
"We had a lot of chances," said Princeton coach Julie Shackford. "We just couldn't get another one. They had some chances to tie it. It was a little stressful at the end."
The only bad news for Princeton was that Dartmouth rallied to Harvard in overtime 2-1, clinching at least a tie for the Ivy title for the Big Green. Dartmouth, the only team to defeat Princeton this year, also clinched the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Princeton can still gain a tie for the league title by defeating Penn next Saturday in its only remaining regular season game and then having Dartmouth lose a week from Sunday at home to Cornell. Princeton still has a strong shot at an at-large NCAA tournament bid.
