Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Princeton women's swimming and diving team set a Princeton record for consecutive wins when the Tigers captured their 43rd and 44th consecutive wins against Northeastern and Binghamton at the BC Natatorium earlier today. Princeton's streak, which began during the 1997-98 season, eclipses the streak of 43 straight wins, set by the men's tennis team in the late 70's.
The Tigers won eight of the 13 events on the day and earned a 152-90 win against Northeastern and topped Binghamton as well.
Princeton opened the day when Eileen Altenberger won the second event, the 1000 freestyle in a timeof 10:25.70, a little more than second up on teammate Lisa Vollmond-Carstens.
Libby Engelmeier won Event 3, the 200 yard free, and was followed to the finish by Kelly Hannigan and Sarah Fraumann. Engelmeier also won the 500 free later in the day. Sobenna George was Princeton's next winner when she completed the 50 free in 24:48, and topped second-place by almost half a second. Stephanie Hsiao won two events on the day, first she topped the field in the 200 IM by two seconds and later in the day, finished first in the 200 Breaststroke by four seconds on the rest of the field.
Kitsie Kerner led three Tigers to the finish in the 200 Backstroke. Her time of 2:05.60 was a second ahead of Sarah Schaffer and two seconds up on Clare Pearson.
Princeton's final event win of the day came in the 200 freestyle relay, when Sobenna George, Kitsie Kerner, Kristen Arey and Sarah Fraumann teamed up to top second-place Northeastern.
In the diving events, Princeton's Reagan Reber placed second in the 3-meter event and Michelle Demond was second in the 1-meter dive.
Princeton will look to continue the streak when it begins the Ivy portion of its schedule against Penn and Cornell on next Saturday in Ithaca and visits Brown on Sunday.
