Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton men's hockey team fell 3-2 in overtime to Colgate Friday night in front of 1,627 fans at Hobey Baker Rink. Colgate forward Jon Smyth broke a 2-2 stalemate 30 seconds into the overtime period to lift the Raiders to the win. Princeton's two goals came from sophomore Brian Carthas and junior Jesse Masear. Both goals were career firsts for the two players.
Right out of the gates Colgate gained the upper hand, taking a 1-0 lead just 54 seconds into the game. Colgate forward Adam Mitchell gained the puck in the neutral zone and just as he skated into the Princeton zone, wristed a shot at the upper right corner of the Princeton net. Tiger sophomore goaltender Eric Leroux was able to get a piece of it, but not enough as it found the corner of the net. Princeton withstood the rest of the early Colgate push, and momentum began to swing the Tigers' way. Finally at 13:03 of the period, Princeton's hard work paid off in a goal to knot the score up at one. Freshman defenseman Max Cousins dove to keep a Colgate clearing attempt in the offensive zone. He then shoveled a one handed pass across the blue line to junior defenseman Matt Maglione. Maglione then teed up and fired a shot on goal that Carthas deflected right around the face off dot. The puck changed direction and sailed past Colgate netminder Steve Silverthorn. It was the first goal of Carthas' career and he is now tied for the team lead in points with two.
In the second period, it was Princeton's chance to go ahead early, and at 1:43 the Tigers took their first lead of the 2003-04 season. With Mitchell in the penalty box, Princeton took to the power-play. Senior Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer worked the puck to senior Steve Slaton on the right point. Slaton fed Masear on the opposite point where he rifled a shot towards the Colgate net where it bounced off of Colgate defenseman Joey Mormina and into the Raider net. That was Princeton's first power-play tally of the season and lifted Masear into a tie with Carthas for the team lead in points.
Following the goal, there was a rash of penalties on both teams, but it allowed Colgate to draw even on the power-play during a 4-on-3 advantage. Right off an offensive zone face off, Dmitri Yashin and Darryl McKinnon fed the puck back and forth, they worked to Mitchell on the far point who fired a slap shot that beat Leroux as he came across the goal.
The score remained tied through the end of the second and the third, despite strong opportunities for both teams, including a great chance for Colgate's Kyle Wilson in which eh shot a puck wide from the door step, and Silverthorn stoning junior Mike Patton on a breakaway with two minutes to play.
The game went to overtime where Colgate won the opening faceoff. The Raiders re-cycled and carried the puck into the Princeton zone along the left boards. There, Dave Thomas centered a pass to the slot that bounced off a Princeton skate, then off the stick of Jon Smyth and into the Princeton net, giving Colgate their first ECAC win of the season.
Silverthorn stopped 29 Princeton shots to improve to 3-1-0, while Leroux stopped 31 in the loss and is now 0-3-0 with two overtime losses.
The loss extends Princeton's string of overtime games without a win to 19. Princeton is 0-5-14 dating back to March 5, 1999, a 4-3 overtime win at Rensselaer.
Princeton (0-3-0; 0-1-0 ECAC) returns to the ice tomorrow evening at 7 p.m., against Cornell.
