Anderson's OT Goal Lifts Women's Hockey to 3-2 Triumph

Boston, Mass. - Princeton senior forward Gretchen Anderson scored her second goal of the game 2:37 into overtime to lift the Princeton women's hockey team to a 3-2 win over Maine in a neutral site game at Northeastern's Matthews Arena. It was the second game in a row between Princeton and Maine to go into overtime. Last season the two skated to a 2-2 tie at Baker Rink.
Following a scoreless first period that saw Princeton hold a 127 shot advantage, the Tigers finally broke through on Maine netminder Lara Smart at 3:13 of the second period. The goal was scored by junior Becky Stewart and assisted by junior Katharine Maglione. It was Stewart's first goal of the 2003-04 season. Princeton held the lead through much of the period, but Maine's Kate Sunstrum was able to score a goal with 52 seconds remaining in the period to know the game at one. The score remained tied through three-quarters of the third period until Princeton reclaimed the one goal advantage when Anderson tallied her first goal of the game and third of the season. Senior Lisa Rasmussen and sophomore Heather Jackson assisted on the tally. Princeton looked to be in control, but four minutes later, Maine battled back to tie the game up on Karen Droog's goal at 18:17.
Neither team could break through in the final 1:43 of the game so it headed to overtime and set the stage for Anderson's game-winning goal. At 2:37 of the period, Rasmussen set up Anderson and gave Princeton the 3-2 win. Last season the Tigers were 1-1-2 in overtime and they are now 1-0-0 in overtime games this season
Princeton sophomore goaltender Roxanne Gaudiel made 17 saves to earn her first win in her first start of the 2003-04 season.
Princeton improved to 3-3-0; 0-0-0 ECAC on the season and play again tomorrow after against Northeastern at 2 p.m.
