Boston, Mass. - The Princeton women's hockey team's three-game season-opening win streak was snapped following a 3-2 overtime loss at Northeastern this afternoon. Princeton rallied to tie the score at 2-2 when senior Susan Hobson scored with 17.3 seconds remaining in regulation and the goaltender pulled, but in overtime it was Northeastern that found the back of the net, to hand Princeton its first loss of the 2003-04 season.
Northeastern began the game strong and took an early 1-0 lead when Cyndy Kenyon scored 2:38 into the first period. The teams battled back and forth through the period, until Princeton was able to even up the score while on the power-play. With Husky Theresa Ella in the penalty box on an interference call, senior Gretchen Anderson connected with her fifth goal of the season. Anderson's third goal of the weekend was assisted by junior Katharine Maglione and sophomore Chrissie Norwich. Princeton outshot Northeastern 14-8 in the period but could only manage a 1-1 tie going into the first intermission. Play in the second period was one-sided in favor of the Tigers, but Northeastern goaltender Katy Augustyn set the tone, stopping all 13 shots she faced. Northeastern could only muster three shots in the period and all were kicked away by senior goaltender Megan Van Beusekom.
Princeton outshot the Huskies again in the third period, but it was Northeastern's Marie Desrosiers that put her team back on top 4:50 into the period with a rebound goal in front of the Princeton net. The lead would hold up until late in the period when Tiger coach Jeff Kampersal pulled Van Beusekom in favor of an extra-attacker. With a Husky in the penalty box, Princeton held a 6-on-4 advantage and cashed in with 17.3 seconds remaining.
With time winding down, Anderson took a shot on Augustyn who made the stick save. However, the rebound bounced out to a wide-open Hobson, who deposited the rebound past Augustyn. Hobson's first goal of the year was also assisted by senior Angela Gooldy.
Princeton outshot the Huskies 4-2 in overtime, but Ella found the back of the net at 2:51 to give Northeastern the 3-2 win. It was Princeton's second overtime game in as many days as the Tigers earned a 3-2 overtime win against Maine yesterday afternoon.
Princeton is now 3-1-0 on the season and has yet to play an ECAC contest. The Tigers' non-conference schedule continues next weekend at Baker Rink. Princeton's home opener is next Saturday at 2 p.m., against No. 9 New Hampshire. On Sunday, the Tigers meet No. 6 Providence at 2 p.m.
