Box Score
Princeton, N.J. - After battling back and forth for 54 minutes of scoreless hockey, New Hampshire defenseman Martine Garland scored to help lead the Wildcats to a 3-0 shutout of the Princeton women's hockey team. With the loss Princeton is 3-2-0 on the season and will look to get back into the win column tomorrow afternoon against Providence.
Play in the first period was even although the ninth-ranked Wildcats held an 8-5 shot advantage. Both goaltenders, UNH's Melissa Bourdon and Princeton senior Megan Van Beusekom were equal to the task and kept goose eggs on the scoreboard.
The second period was very similar to the first. Play was even, but it opened up a bit and both team's had excellent scoring chances. Princeton had two good opportunities where senior forward Gretchen Anderson carried the puck deep into the offensive zone and put it on net for sophomore Heather Jackson to bang on the rebounds. Despite the strong chances, the score remained 0-0 after two periods. Shots were all tied up at 14 in the second period. Both team's slipped more into the defensive mode in the third period, but New Hampshire was able to break through on a shot from the point to take a lead that would not be relinquished. Stephanie Jones worked the puck to Garland on the blueline, who just shot a puck on net that found its way through several bodies and into the Tiger net.
Princeton stormed back and had a few great opportunities, including one by Anderson right in front, but Bourdon kept the puck out of the net. Then with 44 seconds remaining and Van Beusekom pulled, Jaime VanMassenhove scored into the open net. VanMassenhove would add a second goal with one second remaining.
Van Beusekom made 28 saves and fell to 2-2-0 on the season while Bourdon earned her first career win.
Princeton looks to end its two-game losing streak tomorrow afternoon against No. 6 Providence. Game time at Baker Rink is at 2 p.m.
